Meeting Topic: The Shape of Things to Come. We will first learn about what Steve Jobs of Apple Computer -- who with his friend Steve Wozniak (sometimes known simply as 'The other Steve') founded Apple -- announced in his keynote address at Macworld Expo. Afterwards we will have a brainstorming session to determine what topics and activities we will plan for 2008 for OMUG.

Meeting Topic: The XO Laptop, and the One Laptop Per Child program. The computer field, more than almost any other, is full of visionaries -- men and women who resonate with Bobby Kennedy's famous quote: "There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why... I dream of things that never were and ask why not." Nicholas Negroponte of MIT's Media Lab is the guiding light of (though certainly not the sole contributor to) one such Vision: One Laptop Per Child. What is the most important single tool that any human being can have to make the best of, and get the most of the capabilities and talents with which they are born into their surroundings? An education, that's what. What is potentially the very best tool Mankind has created for learning? Well, actually, it's probably the written word, but the relevant answer in THIS context is: the Computer.
The One Laptop Per Child program is intended to do just what it says: place a laptop computer configured to be used by a child into the hands of every child around the world, especially the
Third World -- and to do so for $100 each. At our June meeting, we'll get a chance to look at and perhaps play with the XO computer developed by the OLPC Foundation. It's not quite down to $100 yet, but it's getting there. It embodies some amazing features for a deliberately-inexpensive devicce, and some even more amasing design choices. I don't think any of us will be trading our Macs for an XO, even if you could get them in the U.S.A., but I think you'll be really interested to get a look at it...!
