Date: March 2nd, 2004

Presenter: OMUG Vice President Dahlia Cavazos

Topic: Adobe Acrobat (full version)

Meeting Summary:

OMUG member Dahlia Cavazos (a graphics design professional) helped us learn some of the many capabilities of this package, including editing of existing PDF files, creation of fillable Forms, workgroup functions which allow sharing a project among multiple users, and fine-tuning of output for high-end printing by service bureaus and other print facilities.

Presenter Dahlia Cavazos discussed the main features of Adobe's Acrobat(TM) software package, which creates, edits and manages "Portable Document Format" documents.

These documents can be viewed and printed on a wide range of hardware platforms and operating systems, retaining the same appearance and formatting no matter where they are viewed as long as an appropriate version of Adobe's FREE Acrobat Reader program is resident. As such, they are ideal for purposes such as documentation, literature, advertising, workgroup projects or any other situation where documents must be shared.

In addition, Dahlia covered a number of special features which can be useful (such as bookmarks, thumbnails, fillable forms, print controls and so forth) which are only available with the "full" versions of the product (as opposed to only the free "reader" software).

Here is the main "slideshow" presentation file she used in her presentation:

In addition, Dahlia recommended a couple of websites for additional information and resources:

&

She also provided a number of reference materials which were not actually part of the presentation:

acrobat.pdf -- A short course handout (12 pages) produced by Texas Tech University

acrobat5clsbk.pdf -- a 16-page classbook produced by Harrison Medical Library

bd_fox_advertising_cs.pdf -- a 2-page document extolling the virtues of the
COLLAB system at B D Fox Advertising, which allows an advertising company
(or anyone with similar needs) to do all the markup, proofreading and other steps
necessary to create, revise and approve a document for publication.

Many other files were also provided, but are not provided here due to space limitations, redundance, or the fact that the same information is available through the websites above or elsewhere on the internet.

All in all, it was a very interesting presentation....
